Adopt a TIP Volunteer Campaign Continues...
On March 12, 2008 TIP of Orange County launched an Adopt a TIP Volunteer Campaign.  The campaign's goal is to raise the funds necessary to support the Chapter's recent growth and to provide support to its volunteers. In the last two years, TIP of Orange County has expanded its service area and its volunteer ranks have grown dramatically. “Our fundraising efforts have not kept up with our growth,” said Wayne Fortin, TIP Founder and CEO. “This campaign will raise the funds necessary to continue to provide our volunteers with the training and resources they need to effectively help our clients,” he said.

The Adopt a TIP Volunteer Campaign invites the TIP constituency—volunteers, staff, Advisory Committee members, emergency responders, and hospital personnel — to adopt a volunteer for one year for $500. TIP is encouraging people to join together as a group to adopt a volunteer. Each member of the group can contribute a small amount towards the $500 goal. If you or a group you belong to is interested in adopting a volunteer, go to
www.TIPNational.org/adopt.htm.

The Adopt a Volunteer Campaign ends on June 1, 2008.

 Meet Gene Drysdale, TIP Volunteer
TIP volunteer Gene Drysdale was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange and has lived in California all his life.  He graduated from California State University with a degree in Public Health Microbiology and in 1994 he established his own family run company which distributes laboratory supplies used to test the quality of food and other products. Now, Gene is what he calls “pretty much retired.” When asked why he joined TIP, he jokingly said, “I was tired of fishing.” But on a serious note he said, “I wanted to find a program of significance.” He reports that TIP is indeed that program. “TIP is rewarding in a way that is hard to put into words,” said Gene. “TIP volunteers come from an enormous range of backgrounds. The common thread is compassion. I have yet to work with a volunteer that I would not want to have as a friend,” he said.

“Gene is a tremendously compassionate man who TIP is lucky to have,” reports Crisis Team Manager, Debbie Simpson. “He has brought us unique ideas and a willingness to jump in and get involved,” she said. Gene receives a great deal of satisfaction from being a TIP volunteer. “To know that I have done some small things to help people get through the worst day of their lives is quite rewarding, he says.

When he is not volunteering for TIP, Gene enjoys fishing, traveling with his wife of 35-years - Leslie, and being a “grandpa” to his two beautiful grandchildren. Smiling from ear to ear Gene says,
“Being a grandpa is the best thing in the world.”

Volunteers Honored at the Crime Survivors Award Banquet
Jim PetersonPat CahillDonna Quaglierini

On March 16, 2008, three TIP volunteers were honored at the Crime Survivors Annual Awards Banquet.  Jim Peterson spent nine hours with the family of a young lady who was stabbed and killed by her boyfriend of 7 years.  Jim’s compassion and genuine caring for the well being of the surviving family members earned him recognition from Patricia Wenskunas, Founder of Crime Survivors.

Pat Cahill & Donna Quaglierini were also recognized for their tireless efforts during the Santiago Canyon Fires.  Both Pat & Donna worked for several days with the OCFA Chaplains at the shelters set up for the families displaced by the fires.  They also worked directly with the families when they returned to what remained of their homes, searching through the ashes for any personal belonging that may have survived the fires.

TIP is proud to work with Crime Survivors, Inc. to assist victims of crime.

Compassion in Action - Western Medical Center-Santa Ana

On March 16, 2008, a freeway collision ended the life of a young college student and put his high school sweetheart in the ICU at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. Nurses in the ICU learned that the young man’s funeral was to be held while the young woman was hospitalized in the ICU. The nurses went to Greg Schwartz, Technical Manager of Information Services at WMC-SA to ask if there was a way for the young woman to attend her boyfriend’s funeral memorial via a TV connection of some kind.

Greg and the Information Services Team with the approval of hospital administration, doctors and the ICU staff went to work. Using their technological expertise, they arranged for the young woman to view her boyfriend's memorial service via a web cam in her ICU room.

TIP commends this team effort of compassion by the staff of Western Medical Center-Santa Ana.

City of Brea Contracts with TIP
Brea police officers have worked with TIP Volunteers for several years because the Brea Police Department provides police services to Yorba Linda, a TIP contract city.  As of March 1, 2008 TIP now serves the residents of Brea as well.  Seeing the difference TIP volunteers made for citizens in crisis in Yorba Linda, Brea PD officers have long desired the ability to call in TIP volunteers for the needs of Brea citizens.

Special thanks go to Detective Debbie J. Stark, Juvenile/Sex Crimes and Captain Martin H. Needham, Investigation Services Division for pursuing the TIP Program for Brea citizens. TIP volunteers are at your service!

TIP Partners With Coast Community College District

Coast Community College District has incorporated the TIP Program into its Emergency Response Plan. In the event of a major incident or disaster, TIP’s trained volunteers will be there to provide emotional first aid and support.

Linda Morin, E.H.S./Emergency Management Coordinator, presented the TIP Program to the District recommending a contract for services.  After a review of the TIP Program’s services, background, and jurisdictions, approval was granted.

Coast Community College District is the first Orange County College District to incorporate the TIP Program into its Emergency Services Plan. In addition to a major emergency, TIP volunteers are available to respond to those daily life disasters that touch the lives of students and staff.
